1840 US Census Martha Offord appears in the 1840 Census in Falls Twp, Muskingum Co., OH with seven children, 3 female, 4 male. 2 males under 5; 1 male 5-10; 1 male 10-15 (possibly Alexander). 1 female <5; 1 female 5-10; 1 female 15-20. After finding the Offord family Bible record in the home of Frank and Margaret Dugan in Aug 1996, we now know for certain that this Martha is the mother of Alexander. We do not know what became of her, whether she remarried or where she died. However, most of her children stayed around Zanesville and McConnelsville. The Carney surname is interesting, because the "C" initial in Ellen C. Faust Dugan is also believed to stand for Carney (this note was made while searching an index in Zanesville in April 1996, but we haven't been able to confirm it). Could they h been related? If Aunt and Niece, then M. D. Dugan and Mabel Offord would have been 3rd cousins! Many of the descendants carried the Carney middle name (John and Grayson, for example).
