Was a farmer in Morgan Twp, Morgan Co., OH, having settled the current Frank Dugan farm 2.5 miles N. of McConnelsville on Dugan Rd sometime in the 1850's or 1860's. He built three houses on the farm, the largest of which was built in 1881 and is still occupied. According to deed records, the farm was purchased in four stages. 110 acres were acquired on June 5, 1863 from a Julia Scott for $40 on a quit-claim deed. She had acquired the land from a John Perry in 1856. The small price suggests that this was some kind of inheritance, but we have no record of Julia or John being in the family unless they were related to Hannah. This was the top part of the 160-acre section 35. His obituary (below) indicates he was !LIVING on the farm prior to 1860. How that came to be is at present unknown. The 80 acres on which the present house stands was acquired in 1876 from the Townsend family for $3050. (The red barn is actually on the 110 acres). 35 acres were acquired in 1879 for $1225, part of the bottom 50 acres of the 160-acre section. The remaining 15 acres of the south east corner of the section were obtained in 1885 from the estate of Ann Durbin, who may have been a McConnell descendant, as this small parcel of land was preserved for her until her death. Previously, Alexander had owned a house on Lot 80 in McConnelsville and in 1874 took out a mortgage on Lot #83 of the Second addition to McConnelsville for $623.17. This may have been done for one of the children. His obituary in the Mar 4, 1910 Morgan Co. Democrat reads: Mr. Alexander Offord died suddenly of Brights disease, at his home Friday night, February 25, aged 83 years and one month. Mr. Offord was married almost sixty years ago to Miss Hannah Callahan. To this union were born ten children, seven of whom with their mother survive. The children !LIVING are Mrs. W. A. Pierce (sp) of Cameron, Missouri; Mrs. Hiram Devol of Bloom township, this county; Mrs. R. M. Fouts of Villard, Minnesota; Edward of Olathe, Kansas; Frank who resides on the old home place; Mrs. A. B. Richardson and Mrs. Arthur McLucas of this place. Those deceased are Mrs. J. O. Gregg and Miss Hattie Offord, and one child who died in infancy. Mr. Offord was one of Morgan county's best citizens. He had lived on the same farm for more than fifty years and had accumulated considerable property. About fifty years ago he united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Wesley Chapel and had since been a faithful member and liberal supporter of the church and had held various offices in the church. The funeral was held from the Chapel Monday afternoon at one o'clock and was conducted by his pastor, Rev Mr. Stewart. The 1880 Census indicates his father was born in Maryland and his mother in Pennsylvania. The 1880 Census also shows a Kate Offord in Maryland who is of mixed race. Others have encountered Offords who were black in the military service. Perhaps, it was in Maryland where the Offords who were slaveholders lived. 1860 Census also shows an Alexander Offord in PA according to "Three Centuries of Offords" publication. However, this Alexander Offord had been in Morgan Co., OH for ten years. However, it could be that the family still owned land in Cumberland Co. PA and were recorded there in the census also.
