From Bone Genealogy, 1962: He was a born artist. At age 4 he received his first water colors. At 10 he received his first commission from the local butcher. He painted a bull to decorate the front of the butcher shop, for which he was paid $10. At 19 he went to New York city to study in the National Academy of Design. He also studied under Wm. M. Chase. Later he taught in Cooper Union and the Art Students League. He became nationally known during the Spanish-American War, painting Roosevelt and his Rough Riders for Leslie's Weekly and Scribners. His posters for WW I and WW II were famous. After a few years of painting the Christy Calendars, illustrating for Cosmopolitan and book of poems by James Whitcomb Riley he turned to protrait painting, ladscapes, still life and historical murals. His mural "Signing of the Constitution" hangs in the National Capitol. He painted portraits of many notables, among them Amelia Earhart, Lawrence Tibbets, Will Rogers, Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, Calvin Coolidge, Mrs. Coolidge (hangs in the White House) and Herbert Hoover. The first commerative exhibit of his paintings was held in Carnegie Hall, New York City May 17-31, 1962. According to Mr. Robert D. Carnes in a letter to the Morgan County Herald in March 2001, Howard was born in a double log house on Four Mile on the farm formerly owned by the Whipples and Charles Beard. The road between present day S. R. 78 and Meigs Creek on which the house stood is long since closed. The road terminated near the old Loren Devol residence. The quarter section was originally owned by Daniel Chandler, a veteran of the War of 1812, who was Howard's grandfather.

Lived most of her life on the Offord farm (now Dugan farm) 2.5 miles North of McConneslville. Retired to Malta with her husband, M. D. Dugan, where she died of heart failure. She sometimes signed her name May Belle, so that might be her actual birth name. The Smith descendants generally had multiple names so it would have been unusual for her not to have a middle name.

WILL CROISANT CALLED IN DEATH The death of Mrs. Will Croisant occured Sunday at the hospital in Woodward, OK, following a short illness. The funeral was held Tuesday from the M. E. Church in this city. The Rev. J. G. Boyle having charge of the services. Internment was made in the Mooreland Cemetery. R. J. Knittel, undertaker, in Charge. Laura Jane Peaney was born near Miltonvale, KS, August 4, 1894; died in Woodward, OK March 15, 1931. She moved with her parents from Kansas to Oklahoma about 29 years ago and grew to woomwahood in this community. She joined the Baptist Church in 1911 at the Chick School house. She united in marriage to Will Croisant January 2, 1913. To this union seven children were born; Chester, Clementine, Lyle, Billy, Fred, and Gene, who with the father survive her, and an infant son who preceded her in death.
