It was difficult to find Peter's identity. His son Richard, from whom the authors are descended, was found easily through census records and birth records of his children. However, Richard's obituary mentioned neither his father or his mother. Dede Dugan Busk remembers that family lore was that the Dugans were descended from two brothers who ran a "saloon" in Zanesville. This would certainly match John S. Dugan. There is ample written about John S. Dugan, and his ability to run a tavern in Zanesville historical records. But we didn't know the name of the other brother. We had a clue that Richard's mother was the "Anna Mary" Dugan who was William Mattingly's second wife. William Mattingly was also a benefactor of St. Thomas Church. The name Anna Mary showed up in one Mattingly history, but not another. Pat Place entered it in his genealogy database and posted it on the Web where it was noticed by Roger Dugan. Following up on this lead, it was discovered that Richard Dugan was listed in the Mattingly history as being in the wedding party when William's son, Chidely, was married. Thus, we had concluded the circumstantial evidence was very strong that "Anna Mary" was Richard's mother. We still do not know much about Peter or even how and when he died. We assume he was dead before 1833 when his widow married William Mattingly. Here is what we do know and a record of how we found it. On 5/17/97, Roger and Frank Dugan were at the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus while Margaret Broedel Dugan was recovering from surgery. Getting their first look at the 1820 census, they noticed a Peter Dugan household in Zanesville as well as John S. Dugan's. Immediately they suspected this was Richard's father because Richard named his first son Peter. (The first daughter was named Mary). Then they found Peter's name among the Zanesville marriage records, being joined with a "Maria" Williams. This was correlated to a record of William Mattingly's 1833 marriage to "Ann Maria" Dugan. On 6/24/97, Dede Dugan Busk and Shiela Dugan Hansen accompanied Roger to the McIntire Library in Zanesville. Dede found in Lewis's history of Muskingum Co that one person recalled the dinner bell at the Green Tree Tavern seemed to call out "Peter Dugan" to him as it rang. Later in the same book, Peter is specifically mentioned as the brother who accompanied John S. on his journey from Brownsville, PA to sell hats. No record yet of his death or burial has yet been found. Given the time of his death, it is unclear if he was buried under the church with his brother and then later moved or if he was buried in St. Thomas Cem directly. On 6/24/97, it was found from the McIntire library records that there was an illegible marker beside Ann Maria Mattingly's in St. Thomas Cen at one time. Both are now displaced because of vandalism. We think it likely that it was Peter's marker. The 1830 Census lists Peter's household with 1 male under 5 (John), 1 male 10-15 (Richard), 1 female 5-10 (?), 1 female 20-30 (?), 1 female 30-40 (Ann Maria). We know about John from Richard's obituary. Who were the other females? The female 20-30 is unlikely to be their child and is probably a servant. St Thomas church records these marriages of Dugan women in the late 30's when the sister would likely to be old enough to marry: Sarah Elizabeth Dugan to Thomas Jefferson Ramsey, 8 Jan 1839 Jane Dugan to John Quemby, 17 Aug 1837. Neither of these names has any known family connection. We would have expected that she would have been named after Peter's mother or Ann Maria's mother. We do not know either at present (1998). However, in 1848, an Elizabeth Dugan, age 102, was buried at St. Thomas. At the OHS, we found a marriage record for a Samuel Dugan and an Elizabeth Watson in PA in 1764. Lewis Henry Dugan, son of John S., wrote that the St. Thomas church started in the house of his "grandmother". It is known that the church met in the Green Tree Tavern early on, but there is no other mention of the mother of John S. and Peter. We are hoping to find evidence that Elizabeth was his grandmother. If she was, then Sarah Elizabeth Dugan was probably a sister to Richard and John. And we may be looking for a Sarah Williams on the other side of the family. Peter and John Simon came to Zanesville with their widowed sister, Mrs. Mary Harkins, and 9 of her children. Peter and Ann Maria Williams were married by a Presbyterian minister (Culbertson) who also apparently had connections with the Balls (related to the Dede Dugan Busk's line). Other Dugans in the 1830 census (heads of households) in Muskingum Co. were Barbara C. Dugan (widow of John S. and later married to James Taylor) in Zanesville, Andrew and Wm. Dugan in Newton Twp., John Dugan in "SAL" twp. There were several Dugan women listed in the marriage records in Zanesville from 1825-1835. We have no idea yet if they are related.
