Times Recorder, Obituary, Aug 12, 1895 (Zanesville, OH) Text of the obituary: Richard H. Dugan, who was probably the oldest native resident of this city, died at 10:30 last night at his residence, No. 234 Lee-st, aged seventy-six years. Owing to his life-long residence in this city he was widely known to the older citizens, but he has been an invalid for the past nineteen years, as the result of rheumatism contracted during his servise in the union army. He gradually grew weaker and his death has not been unexpected. As stated above, Richard H. Dugan was born in this city in 1819, five years after it was incorporated as a borough. When a young man, he leard the upholstering trade, at which he worked until his health broke down. He was married to his wife, who still survives him, in 1843 - fifty-two years ago - they being the first couple married in St. Thomas Catholic church. Besides his widow, a brother John, who lives in Oregon, and seven children - Mrs. John O'Neill, Mrs. W.T. Morton, Mrs. Ella Clark, and Charles and Louis Dugan, of this city, and John Dugan of LaSalle, Ills., and Peter Dugan, of Pensacola, Fla., survive him. When the war broke out Mr. Dugan enlisted in the 122nd O.V.I. and served gallantly in that famous regiment under Colonels Ball and Granger. It was while in the service and exposed to the elements as well as to the fire of the rebel guns that he contracted the rheumatism which, after a long and painful illness, has caused his death. He has been a helpless invalid for a long time and at the time of his death was drawing a pension of $72 a month for total disability. He was a lifelong, consistent member of St. Thomas' Catholic church, honest and straightforward in his dealings with his fellow-men, and enjoyed the respect and esteem of all with whom he came in contact. The bereaved family have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends. Grave marker is a simple white veteran's marker to the right of the W. T. Morton marker, which is the most visible from the road in Greewood Cemetery. Section 8, Tier 3, Lot 3. This lot was purchased in 1870 by his son Peter when his first wife died. He was in I Company of the 122 OVI for about a year before receiving a medical discharge. In 1860 Census, he and his family are listed as !LIVING in the same house as a Frank Mullen, born Ireland. He was much poorer than in 1850, so we might assume there was an economic setback. We don't know much about Mr. Mullin, however, there is a Civil War marker similar to Richard's in the same plot as most of Albert H.'s family bearing the name Francis Mullen. Obviously, he was a close friend of the family. Richard's net worth in 1860 was $100. Perhaps, he and Richard went to war together to improve their economic lot in life. That might explain why Richard would leave his family for the battle field at age 42 or so. In 1870 Census, listed as !LIVING in Putnam, Springfield (Twp?). Richard is listed in one of the Mattingly family history books. He was a witness to the wedding of one of William Mattingly's sons, Chidely, in 1842 at St. Thomas Church. Mr. Mattingly had taken a "Anna Mary" Dugan as his second wife about 10 years earlier. Since Richard is with the wedding party in an official capacity, our theory is that Anna Mary is probably Richard's mother, Ann Maria. This is undoubtedly true since Ann Maria Mattingly's marker is in St Thomas Cem where Peter Dugan is buried.
