In May and June of 1997, we were able to confirm that Ann Maria was Peter's wife to the best of our ability. We know nothing about her ancestry. The Mattingly history refers to her as "Anna Mary" Dugan. She apparently went by "Mary Mattingly" after marrying William Mattingly. However, the marriage records clearly call her Ann Maria. We suspected early on that the Anna Mary Dugan in Pat Place's database was Richard Dugan's mother. In 1842, Richard is listed in the Mattingly history as witnessing the wedding of William's son, Chidely. The supposition is that Richard was an official member of the wedding party because William was his stepfather. Sadly, her grave marker has been overturned by vandals in St. Thomas Cem and piled up with several other markers between two trees. Fortunately, the stone is text side up so it can be read. The inscription clearly reads "Ann Maria Mattingly". She was apparently born in 1799 from the age given on the marker, which indicates she died in her 54th year. If we were to use naming patterns to speculate on her parents names, we would guess that Richard Williams was her father's name.
