John was probably born in PA, possibly in the Bucks Co. area because that is where his wife is from. After marriage, the couple apparently moved to Herkimer Co., NY, according to LDS records. In fact, the LDS record has them !LIVING out their lives there, which we know is not true. John and his brother were making and selling hats in Brownsville, PA in the early 1800's when he set his sights on Ohio. He couldn't sell his inventory in Brownsville, so over the winter, he and his brother, Peter, built a boat which they floated down the river to Louisville and St. Louis. After selling their hats, they walked back the Zane Trace to Ohio. While staying in a hotel in Zanesville, they learned the proprietor was anxious to sell. They bought the hotel and returned to Brownsville to settle affairs. He returned to Zanesville on April 1, 1817 to take possession of the hotel, which he named the Green Tree Tavern. Lewis Henry, his son later wrote of an anxious time during the trip crossing the flooded Wills Creek in Cambridge. They had to cross to ensure that they would be in Zanesville in time to close the deal. He was followed westward with his wife and young son, his brother Peter, and his widowed sister, Mrs. Mary Harkins, and her nine children. A prominent early settler of Zanesville, he was instrumental in the formation of the St. Thomas Catholic Church, having donated some of the land. This was only the second Catholic church in Ohio. (This information comes from St. Thomas Church histories). He operated a stagecoach line between Zanesville and Cumberland Md. The line also had a local route through Newark and Knox Co. Historical documents in the McIntire library in Zanesville list some of the advertisements. He also conducted the hotel at the corner of Fifth and Main St where he is reported to have hosted many dignitaries including James Madison (or was it Monroe?), His advertisements boasted of the finest German servants, one of whom supposedly was in Napoleon's army. These servants appear to have been indentured and worked their indenturement off at the hotel. The connection to German servants is likely through his wife's side of the family. The 1820 census lists 25 males in John's household. On a trip to transport the first Catholic priest to Zanesville, there was an accident with the Stagecoach and Mr. Dugan was killed. The horses ran away coming down a mountain. He is mentioned in several histories of Ohio, Muskingum and Knox Counties, which is fortunate, because we were able to learn quite a bit about the family that would have been difficult otherwise. His body is literally buried beneath the St. Thomas Church. The location originally had a small cemetery. When the larger church was built, most of the bodies were moved to the St. Thomas Cemetery on the hill. A few were left, including John's wife when she died in 1867. Later, during remodeling, the bodies were discovered. A check of church records revealed their identity. All except John's body were removed to St. Thomas Cemetery. John's was supposedly left behind and is today marked by a small brass cross in the basement floor.
